Regional NBN

The NBN rollout is well and truly happening and regional Australia is embracing the technology by getting hooked up via the NBN fixed wireless service. The last 12 months has seen the number of houses, farms and businesses reached in this way increase fourfold to more than 100,000.

Fixed wireless delivery works using advanced technology often referred to as LTE or 4G. The service is engineered to deliver services to a fixed number of premises within a coverage area. This means that the bandwidth per premises is designed to be more consistent than the existing mobile wireless service, even in peak times of use.
Unlike a mobile wireless service where capacity can be more affected by the number of people moving into and out of the area, the capacity available in an NBN fixed wireless network is designed to remain relatively steady.

The method of delivery is preferred for regional and outer-metro areas where the aim is to provide a fast and reliable broadband service without spending millions on infrastructure. Quite simply, it is a relatively quick and cost-effective way of getting regional Australia online with the NBN.

In turn, regional Australia is responding. NBN Co Chief Operating Officer, Greg Addock, is confident the marked increase in number of these connections demonstrates the desire of such areas to maintain pace with the rest of the country: “It’s clear from these figures that people outside the major cities want better broadband. We’ve put a significant focus on accelerating rollout of NBN Co’s fixed wireless service to rural and regional Australia”, said Mr. Addock.

“That allows people in these communities to take advantage of the economic and social opportunities that the rest of the country takes for granted.”
