Free Public Wifi in Victoria

5 Nov 2014

This week Victoria launched its free public WiFi pilot program with the Queen Victoria Market, central Bendigo and central Ballarat being the first areas to showcase the technology.

The three sites provide Victoria’s answer to the already-functioning public WiFi zones in Canberra, Perth, Adelaide and Liverpool in New South Wales as well as those in major cities around the world, including New York.

Victorian Premier, Denis Napthine, has pledged to provide 1000 WiFi spots clustered around Melbourne city centre, Bendigo and Ballarat by 2015. The estimated cost for the roll-out of the pilot program is around $6.7 million.
"It will help to improve the tourism experience, draw more digital entrepreneurs to Victoria, support small businesses and the education sector and provide additional communications support during emergencies," Dr Napthine said.

To begin with, the WiFi service provided will be free of advertisements. However, there has been no guarantee offered that this will last, with an obvious array of revenue-generating potential to consider. The WiFi service is set to be open to everyone with no password required to connect.

Users will be able to access the network outdoors at street level and there will be a 250MB per day limit imposed on each device. However, there will be no time limits on the service and as well as not requiring a password, users will not be asked to provide an email address or username in order to connect.

So next time you’re in central Melbourne, Ballarat or Bendigo open the connection settings on your smart phone or tablet, look for VicGovFree Wi-Fi and get connected!
